SOC 6160 - Sociological Theory


This seminar is designed to help students review the historical roots of sociological theory and understand major theoretical paradigms with an emphasis on social and intellectual contexts, conceptual frameworks and methods, and contributions to contemporary social analysis.

Requisites: Graduate Standing in Sociology
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will acquire the ability to analyze the origins and structure of sociological theory.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast the differing theoretical perspectives, noting the theories’ strengths and limitations
  • Students will be able to evaluate contemporary sociological theories and apply them to social research questions.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe assumptions of selected sociological theories.
  • Students will understand the role of theory in sociological research.
