SOC 6550 - Teaching Sociology


This course helps Sociology graduate students develop an effective approach to teaching, including an overarching philosophy and framework for teaching, as well as applied teaching strategies and skills. In addition to readings, discussions, and hands-on teaching skills sessions, seminar assignments enable students to create a foundational teaching portfolio.

Requisites: Graduate student in Sociology
Credit Hours: 4

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to apply ideas and information from the scholarship of teaching and learning to their own teaching portfolio.
  • Students will be able to create an integrated teaching portfolio, including draft and revised teaching materials.
  • Students will be able to design foundational components for an undergraduate course, including a syllabus and other materials.
  • Students will be able to develop a personal teaching statement, including teaching and learning goals and strategies.
  • Students will be able to develop skills in preparing and delivering a lecture and planning and facilitating class discussion.
  • Students will be able to evaluate presentations and teaching portfolio components developed by fellow seminar members and provide peer feedback.
  • Students will be able to review and evaluate selected published work in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
