AH 4711 - Methods in Art History


Students investigate various methodological approaches to the study of art history. By becoming familiar with scholarly argumentation and method, students learn to be self-reflective about disciplinary modes used to undertake and present research. Students locate their research within art history’s debates and methodological conventions by developing a primary and a secondary methodology in preparation for their theses.

Requisites: (AH 2110 and 2130) and (3 courses in AH at 3000 or 4000 level) and JR or SR only
Credit Hours: 3

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and apply methodological approaches from art history.
  • Students will be able to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize art historical information as gleaned from a variety of primary and secondary sources.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate interpretive skills through oral presentations and written works.
  • Students will be able to critically assess and comment on their own writing and the writing of others.
  • Students will be able to articulate their own scholarly identities and apply their reflections to complex scholarly writing.
