ART 2410 - Lithography/Monotype

Students are introduced to both through demonstrations, lectures, viewing original prints and hands-on studio work. Critiques, group discussions, research, and information gathering assignments complement the skill-building components. Students are given the flexibility for in-depth exploration of selected techniques to gain fluency with the media and related terminology, to develop nuanced problem-solving abilities, and to engage in contemporary, conceptual conversation surrounding lithography, monotype and the field of printmaking in general.

Requisites: Any two courses from the following (ART 1111, 1121, 1131, 1141, 1151, 1161, 1171, 1181, 1191, 1200, 1210, 1220, 1230, or VICO 1414); AND SOPH, JR, or SR
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 studio, 2.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate problem solving skills related to technical challenges within lithography and monotype.
  • Students will be able to create personal works of art using lithographic and monotype techniques.
  • Students will be able to articulate proper terminology used in lithographic and monotype.
  • Students will be able to maintain and safely work in a lithography printshop.
  • Students will be able to identify a diverse and inclusive range of historic and contemporary artists and issues in the field of lithography and monotype.
  • Students will be able to select the proper combination of lithographic and monotype materials and techniques to produce the outcome needed for a particular project.
  • Students will be able to print a consistent, lithographic editions using registration methods and physical discipline.
  • Students will be able to mix lithographic and monotype ink and modifiers to achieve specific colors and translucency.
  • Students will be able to strategically plan for and utilize lithographic and monotype layers within an image.
