ART 3420 - Papermaking


Students learn how to prepare the fibers, operate a paper beater, pull and couch sheets, and utilize pre-made or handmade molds to create 2-D and 3-D works of art. Demonstrations, lectures, investigation of fiber characteristics, and hands-on studio work are core course components; alongside of critiques, group discussions, research, and information gathering assignments. Students are given the flexibility for in-depth exploration of selected techniques to gain fluency with the media and related terminology, to develop nuanced problem-solving abilities, and to engage in contemporary, conceptual conversation surrounding papermaking.

Requisites: Any two courses from the following (ART 1111, 1121, 1131, 1141, 1151, 1161, 1171, 1181, 1191, 1200, 1210, 1230; VICO 1414) and any two 2000-level ART Studio courses and Soph, Jr, or Sr
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 studio, 2.0 lecture

  • Students will be able to identify and prepare appropriate fibers for making paper, as related to their concept and purpose.
  • Students will be able to solve problems related to technical challenges within papermaking.
  • Students will be able to create unique works of art using papermaking techniques.
  • Students will be able to recognize and use proper terminology used in papermaking.
  • Students will be able to maintain and safely work in a paper lab.
  • Students will be able to identify a diverse and inclusive range of historic and contemporary artists and issues in papermaking.
  • Students will be able to pull consistently formed sheets of paper for printing and bookmaking.
  • Students will be able to effectively use various types of molds suitable for paper pulp.
  • Students will be able to analyze and evaluate artworks made of paper.
