BIOS 3200 - Fundamentals of Animal Cell Biology


Comprehensive introduction to the structure and function of animal cells, emphasizing fundamental principles and concepts of modern cell biology and the dynamic nature of cells and their components.

Requisites: C- or better in BIOS 3100
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe how the 3D structure of a molecule and its subcellular localization impact its function, including its ability to interact with other molecules and catalyze reactions.
  • Students will be able to explain why the structure of molecules may be similar due to common ancestry or selection for similar function.
  • Students will be able to describe how information stored in DNA is expressed as RNA and proteins, which affect cell structure and function.
  • Students will be able to describe the properties and consequences of intracellular and intercellular movement of molecules.
  • Students will be able to analyze how the structure of a cell–its shape, membrane, organelles, cytoskeleton, and polarity–affects its function.
  • Students will be able to evaluate how mutations that change gene regulation and/or protein structure can affect cellular anatomy and function.
  • Students will be able to explain how signal transduction pathways are crucial in relaying signals between and within cells.
  • Students will be able to evaluate how signal reception by cells may vary with location and time so that different cell types express different genes.
  • Students will be able to discuss ethical implications of cell biology techniques and information on genetic and cellular function.
  • Students will be able to use scientific reasoning (critical thinking) to analyze novel problems in cell biology and describe the results of the analysis using scientific writing.
