CARS 2020 - Roman Archaeology
Rome’s material culture and artistic styles were shaped at first by other regions within Italy, and then through conquest of the Greek and Eastern kingdoms. This course explores material remains from the Roman world and the information they provide about Roman society at different periods in time. We examine sculpture, painting, coinage, and architecture to learn how Romans at different periods and various levels of society used objects, images, and built structures to make statements about themselves and others.

Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to identify and put in context the terminology, sites and types of artifacts characteristic of the different subdisciplines and periods of study in Roman archaeology.
- Students will be able to interpret scholarly archaeological writing relevant to the different periods and regions of study belonging to Roman culture.
- Students will be able to apply their knowledge about Roman archaeology and material culture to new or unfamiliar objects and sites.
- Students will be able to evaluate critically archaeological theories about the development of different cultural institutions in Roman society.
- Students will be able to identify examples of Roman material culture which have been adopted by other ancient and modern cultures.
- Students will be able to analyze how Roman material culture has been adapted to support cultural agendas of ancient and modern cultures.
