HIND 1110 - Elementary Hindi-Urdu I Culture based approach to increased language proficiency designed to foster openness toward, empathy for, and curiosity about Hindi-Urdu speakers. Students continue to develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills as they study the diverse history and customs of Hindi-Urdu speakers.
Requisites: WARNING: not HIND 1120 Credit Hours: 4 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Diversity and Practice General Education Code (students who entered prior to Fall 2021-22): 2CP Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to articulate insights about their own cultural rules and biases.
- Students will be able to define the Indian ideology as well as other important Indian values that influence communication styles.
- Students will be able to identify social, political, economic and cultural structures in India, as well as compare these to their own countries.
- Students will be able to explain how language and culture are intertwined and provide some examples in which cultural and social beliefs affect language form.
- Students will be able to detect and use verbal and nonverbal clues to perform their tasks successfully and appropriately.
- Students will be able to develop empathy, withhold their judgement and initiate social interaction with culturally different others.
- Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of some basic knowledge of and the ability to use Hindi in everyday situations effectively and appropriately.
