MATH 4150 - Advanced Perspectives for Math Teachers


Key math content topics such as algebra, calculus, discrete mathematics, and mathematical modeling, studied throughout the AYA Math Content courses are revisited in light of their applicability to High School mathematics. Students synthesize previous content knowledge and bring a depth of understanding of mathematics to topics and themes they will likely teach in a grades 7-12 setting. This course is intended as a capstone mathematics content course for AYA Mathematics majors and students in the Masters of Education with AYA Math certification. Other undergraduate majors may enroll but this course cannot count for credit towards the undergraduate or graduate degrees offered by the mathematics department. With the approval of their advisor Mathematics Education PhD students may enroll for credit in their program of study but this course will NOT count for credit in the masters or PhD in mathematics degrees.

Requisites: MATH 3300. Integrated Mathematics majors must take this course concurrently with MATH 4100 and 4100L

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe connections between the mathematics content learned for their undergraduate degree program and the mathematics content they will teach in grades 7-12.
  • Students will be able to analyze common mathematical problems and real-world models using functions, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, statistics, probability, and data analysis.
  • Students will be able to analyze solutions of mathematical problems to determine alternative means of solving the problem and representing solutions.
  • Students will be able to analyze solutions of mathematical problems to determine way of extending and generalizing them and representing solutions.
  • Students will be to construct and analyze proofs of key mathematical ideas and concepts of their undergraduate mathematics coursework and grades 7-12 mathematics.
  • Students will be able to justify common algorithms and procedures of the grades 7-12 mathematics curriculum.
