REC 2010 - Introduction to Parks, Recreation & Leisure


Provides a broad understanding of the value of recreation and leisure in society. Emphasis is placed on the role of recreation and leisure in promoting health and wellbeing in individuals as well as nurturing and maintaining vibrant communities. Topics include historical and theoretical perspectives of the value of recreation and leisure in society, the diversity of recreation and leisure pursuits across cultural contexts, the nature of recreation and leisure throughout the lifespan, the use of recreational sports in facilitating positive youth development, the role of recreation and leisure in promoting community development, and the scope of the parks, recreation, and leisure services industry.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and discuss historical events that influenced the development of the parks, recreation, and leisure services industry in the United States.
  • Students will be able to describe selected assumptions, concepts, and theories related to parks, recreation, and leisure.
  • Students will be able to apply these assumptions, concepts, and theories to explain the role that a culture’s history, values, politics, and beliefs can have on play, recreation, and leisure behavior.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate insight regarding the influence of their own cultural histories on their recreation and leisure choices and preferences.
  • Students will be able to explore complex questions regarding the nature of recreation and leisure in other cultures and to articulate answers to these questions from multiple cultural perspectives.
  • Students will be able to differentiate between the various segments of the parks, recreation, and leisure services industry.
  • Students will be able to identify and utilize professional resources as a basis for continued professional development in the field of recreation and leisure services.
  • Students will be able to identify ways to enhance inclusivity by examining the systemic barriers that prohibit full recreation participation among individuals and populations from diverse backgrounds and will use inclusive behaviors with others.
  • Students will be able to use reflect empathetically on how certain identity markers such as socioeconomic status, age, race, ethnicity, and gender impact the equitable distribution of recreation resources across communities and society at large.
