SW 3801 - Introduction to Social Work Practice Methods


Focuses on the development of effective social work communication and practice skills utilizing the different stages of the planned change model as they relate to the social work relationship and professional practice. Requires students apply social work ethics to practice especially regarding diverse populations. Additionally, students develop knowledge of social work theories, including Systems Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, and other developmental theories. Cultural sensitivity, cultural humility, and professional self-awareness are also course components.

Requisites: SW major and (Jr or Sr)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe the process of the social work interview and the characteristics of each stage in the process.
  • Students will be able to identify effective interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate use of interviewing skills (e.g., empathy, questioning, summarizing, etc.).
  • Students will be able to critique a professional social work interview.
  • Students will be able to describe the ethical foundation of social work practice.
  • Students will be able to apply social work values and ethical standards to case situations across system levels.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate personal reflection and self-awareness.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication skills.
