CFS 4785 - Medical and Therapeutic Play in Child Life


This course provides an overview of therapeutic and medical play techniques used in child life practice. Students learn the theoretical framework of play therapy, the foundational elements of child-centered play, and play functions in various settings. Course content focuses on the impact of life-threatening, chronic, and terminal illnesses and end-of-life and trauma issues of the hospitalized child/family. Students examine and discuss child-centered play therapy techniques that address children and families.

Requisites: B or better in CFS 4770
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 6.0 hours.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify various forms of play used with children in a medical setting (child-centered, guided/directed).
  • Students will be able to describe and practice basic child-centered play techniques applicable in healthcare and community settings.
  • Students will be able to describe communication and language techniques that foster the therapeutic play relationship with children and families.
  • Students will be able to identify the foundation of play and play therapy utilized to work with children in a therapeutic setting.
  • Students will be able to implement directive medical play techniques with children in healthcare settings.
  • Students will be able to implement non-directive medical play skills with children in the healthcare setting.
  • Students will be able to implement the critical environmental design considerations in healthcare settings.
  • Students will be able to implement strategies for supporting children with specialized needs, including (but not limited to): trauma, aggressive behavior, and developmental variations within the healthcare setting.
