HLTH 6791 - Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control


The epidemiology of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung diseases, chronic neurologic disorders, and musculoskeletal diseases will be studied. Risk factors, extent, and modern public health approaches to prevention and control of major chronic diseases will be covered. The public health burden of chronic disease will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe the extent and epidemiological aspects of chronic diseases.
  • Describe the importance of chronic disease surveillance programs and chronic disease registries.
  • Differentiate between the population-level (public health) and individual-level (clinical) approaches to prevention and control of chronic diseases, and discuss how these two approaches can complement each other.
  • Discuss how the findings from epidemiological studies of chronic diseases can be used for chronic disease programs.
  • Discuss the concept of the public health burden of disease.
  • Explain existing public health approaches to prevention and control of major chronic diseases.
  • Explain the major risk factors for particular chronic diseases.
