EDSP 5830 - Methods of Teaching in Inclusive Early Childhood Settings


This course focuses on promoting the health and learning of young children receiving services and supports under IDEA by preparing to (a) create conducive learning environments and (b) plan and deliver meaningful learning opportunities across developmental domains. Students learn diverse methods for the provision of developmentally appropriate materials and interventions to promote the learning of young children with disabilities. Students acquire a variety of instructional strategies to provide learning opportunities to children that enhance children’s participation, engagement, and development in their least restrictive environment.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to construct curriculum objectives that are relevant for particular children.
  • Students will be able to describe differences in family structures and social and cultural backgrounds of those families.
  • Students will be able to design activity plans that integrate goals and intervention strategies from different disciplines.
  • Students will be able to design activity plans that integrate intervention objectives and strategies into ongoing, everyday routines and activities.
  • Students will be able to develop individual intervention plans that reflect consideration of family resources, concerns and priorities, natural environments, and child assessments.
  • Students will be able to describe professional and ethical practices in early childhood settings.
  • Students will be able to execute appropriate guidance techniques that maintain child engagement individually and in group situations.
  • Students will be able to utilize planning and intervention strategies conducive to fostering independence, initiative, and problem solving in young children with disabilities.
  • Students will be able to utilize formative and summative program evaluation to ensure comprehensive quality of the total environment for children, families and the community.
  • Students will be able to systematically match instructional techniques and settings to learning objectives.
