NRSE 7220 - Advanced Pharmacology for Advanced Practice Nursing


Focuses on pharmacotherapeutics across the lifespan with emphasis on clinical decision making by advanced practice nurses. Laws governing prescriptive authority and privileges of advanced practice nurses are addressed. Emphasis on prescriptive decisions with the context of outcomes, safety, quality and costs.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe and apply pharmacotherapeutics of systems-focused classification of drugs, including actions, contraindications and rationale for use.
  • Students will be able to appropriately select pharmacological agents for the management of health problems across the lifespan based on individual variations, cost, safety and efficacy.
  • Students will be able to analyze impact of pharmacological agents on select physiological or pathophysiological outcomes.
  • Students will be able to describe the impact of polypharmacy, drug-drug interactions and use of drugs in special circumstances such as pregnancy or lactation.
  • Students will be able to integrate the professional, legal and ethical aspects of the advanced practice nurse in prescribing and managing pharmacological therapy recognizing responsibility, accountability and scope of practice.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the correct way to write or use informatic technology for prescriptions.
  • Students will be able to synthesize emerging research or evidence-based knowledge regarding utilization of pharmacological agents in selected disease processes using advanced clinical reasoning and lifelong learning.
