OCOM 7110 - Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Honors 1


This course is the first in a series of two courses available to second year osteopathic medical students. This course provides second year Osteopathic medical students with an opportunity to advance their skills in, understanding of and capacity to teach Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) beyond the level possible through the standard year 1 and 2 curricula. This course is designed to assist student in developing their teaching skills, including supervising the progressing of their 1st year students and by doing so will allow the students to deepen their understanding and refine their palpatory skills. Additionally, students swill have the opportunity to evaluate articles relevant to the osteopathic philosophy, principles and practices and to learn new diagnostic and therapeutic skills beyond the standard OMM preclinical courses. 

Course Outcomes
 

  • Student will be able to diagnose and treat utilizing Still techniques for the axial spine, ribs, pelvis, and sacrum..
  • Student will be able to demonstrate the philosophy and treatments for the following osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques: OCMM, BLT/LAR, ME, MFR, SCS, and HVLA.
  • Student will be able to teach integration of their osteopathic structural exam into their clinical exam. 
  • Student will be able to refine delivery of constructive feedback when teaching the first year students. 
  • Student will be able to utilize effective questioning when teaching in Pathways Health and Wellness Curriculum courses. 
  • Student will be able to use evidence-based medicine principles applied to OMM through journal club participation. 
  • Student will be able to develop clinical skills necessary to work towards mastery of the AOA Core competencies.
