Overview
The Department of Classics and Religious Studies offers programs of study in Classics and Religious Studies including minors in Classical Civilization, Greek, Latin, and Religious Studies, and certificates in Jewish Studies and Islamic Studies. Classics and Religious Studies provides an interdisciplinary exploration of ancient civilizations and global religious traditions. Students examine the historical, linguistic, literary, and cultural legacies of Greece, Rome, and the Ancient Near East, alongside the role of religious ideas, leaders, and movements in shaping societies globally across time. The program emphasizes critical thinking, textual analysis, and cross-cultural understanding through coursework in history, archaeology, philology, and religious studies. The Department offers classes in Greek (GK), Latin (LAT), and Classics and Religious Studies (CARS). Students have latitude to focus their studies, if they choose to do so, by selecting electives in the areas of Classical Languages (Greek and Latin), Classical Civilizations (history and literature in translation), or Religious Studies (comparative study of world religions). Minors and certificates provide further opportunities for students to pursue specific interests.
The department offers generous study abroad funding support and sponsors study abroad programs in Turkey and Greece. Please email the departmental contacts listed above about these opportunities.
