The Department of Civil Engineering grants an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in civil engineering, which prepares students for a productive career in government or the private sector, or advanced graduate study. Seniors take the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam, which leads to the Professional Engineer (P.E.) exam. Selected technical electives qualify students for professional registration in surveying.
Building a solid foundation in basic sciences and mathematics, the curriculum helps students develop the ability to think logically and apply knowledge gained to the design and synthesis of complex civil engineering projects.
Principles and practices are covered in courses dealing with fluid, solid, and soil mechanics; construction management; transportation; materials; structural analysis and design; hydrology and hydraulics; and water and wastewater treatment. The senior design course provides a comprehensive design experience for students. Students may emphasize environmental, geotechnical, construction, structural, or transportation/pavement engineering, or water resources with the proper selection of electives.
