Mission

The Department of Mathematics at Ohio University is involved in wide-ranging activities, such as teaching introductory algebra and calculus, providing rigorous mathematics training for engineers, scientists, and math teachers, and conducting cutting-edge research in the mathematical sciences. The Department regards all levels of mathematical scholarship as interrelated and complementary to its role of educating undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences.  Faculty members have won awards for their high quality teaching and they take an active role in developing and maintaining the curriculum and teaching methods, integrating their areas of expertise with their teaching to give students the highest quality preparation.

The Ohio University Department of Mathematics has notable areas of strength and expertise including: abstract algebra, analysis, applied and computational mathematics, coding theory, differential equations and dynamics, discrete mathematics and applications, mathematical biology, mathematics education, statistics and stochastic mathematics, and topology and set theory.  Students in the Department begin their coursework with classes in the foundational areas of calculus and linear algebra. These are followed by intermediate-level core courses appropriate to the specific program, before taking more advanced elective courses according to their interests.

Programs

The Department of Mathematics offers undergraduate degrees with majors in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and Actuarial Sciences and a minor in Mathematics. In addition, the Department hosts an interdisciplinary degree with a major in Meteorology and a Mathematics major program through the Honors Tutorial College (HTC) for students with exceptionally strong records. Besides quality undergraduate programs, the Department also supports Masters and Ph.D. programs in Applied, Pure, and Computational Mathematics.

Requirements

In addition to coursework in the mathematical sciences, students in the Department of Mathematics (with the exception of students in the HTC program ) are expected to complete the General Education requirements set by Ohio University, as well as the requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Special Opportunities

Graduates from our programs pursue a variety of careers in business, industry, government, and education. Recent examples include graduates who have started jobs in computer programming and analysis, business consulting, national security, finance, and actuarial positions.  Some of our students choose to continue their studies in graduate and professional schools. Often students in our programs obtain dual degrees in areas where mathematics has significant applications and go to work in those fields. The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics is specifically designed for students who need the flexibility in their program to pursue a double major.  The Department of Mathematics at Ohio University is committed to combining cutting-edge research expertise, interesting curricula, and effective instruction to provide students with a high level of education in the mathematical sciences.
