The Center for International Studies is the fulcrum for global and area studies at Ohio University. The Center’s interdisciplinary teaching, research, service, publications and community outreach activities bring together faculty and students from across the University – in the social sciences, humanities, arts, sciences and professional schools – on the Athens and regional campuses. Ohio University established the Center for International Studies in 1964; it was founded on the broad belief that an appreciation of the world’s values and institutions increases mutual understanding, enriches our individual lives, and prepares people for work in a global environment.
The Center’s M.A. programs meet and strengthen national benchmarks of excellence in area studies and in studies of global development policy and practice, while promoting synergies across our curricula. Programs are centered on interdisciplinary studies that combine social science and humanities approaches with strategic links to the natural sciences and professional fields. In advancing student performance, programs emphasize acquiring second language acquisition and competency, information and learning technologies, professional skill development, and ethical standards in professional practice. Graduating students receive the Master of Arts degree awarded by the Center for International Studies.
The Center for International Studies takes Ohio University’s commitment to global understanding and applies it to the development of knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a rapidly expanding global marketplace of ideas and jobs. The Center advances its mission through interdisciplinary degree programs and activities, faculty development, global research support, community outreach, and the cultivation of institutional linkages across the campus that tie Ohio University to sites across the globe.
