Overview

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers an accredited B.S. in chemical engineering. (Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone (410) 347-7700.) The Department also offers an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering, and an M.S. in biomedical engineering. The Program Educational Objectives are that within a few years of graduation, our chemicalengineering graduates will:

  1. Use their combined academic and professional experience to make lasting contributionsto the betterment of society and their profession.
  2. Further expand their knowledge and skills to increase their effectiveness and influence ina changing world.
  3. Progress in their careers, earning increased responsibility, leadership roles, and therespect of their colleagues.

Undergraduate study begins with foundation courses in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. First-year engineering courses provide early exposure to teamwork and professional development. Individual and team projects throughout the curriculum develop teamwork and communication skills and the ability to solve problems beyond the textbook. Sophomore courses focus on analysis of commercial chemical and biological processes. Junior courses help students develop an in-depth understanding of heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid dynamics, and chemical reactions. The senior year culminates with students operating pilot-scale manufacturing equipment and designing a complete manufacturing process. In addition to these core courses, students select from a wide range of technical elective courses in engineering, science, and mathematics, giving the degree a strong interdisciplinary flavor.
