The College of Health Sciences and Professions consists of the Department of Athletic Training, the Department of Exercise Physiology, the Department of Food and Nutrition Sciences, the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences, the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Studies, the School of Nursing, the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Physician Assistant Practice, and the Department of Social and Public Health, and the Department of Social Work. To provide students with a variety of local clinical or experiential education opportunities, the schools operate Ohio University Therapy Associates which includes the Hearing, Speech Language Clinic, OhioHealth-O’Bleness Hospital Rehabilitation Services, Campus Care at Hudson Hall, Ohio University Athletics, and Pediatric Rehabilitation; Ohio University Respite Volunteer Program; Atrium Cafe; and Nutrition Treatment Program. The University employee wellness program, WellWorks, is also administered by the College.

History, Mission, Vision

Now more than ever, we recognize that health is much bigger and more complex than simply treating disease. Health impacts every facet of life, from the economy to education. At Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions, we’re one of the nation’s largest health-focused colleges. But more importantly, our innovative approach to addressing health — what affects it, who provides it, and how to improve it — is big.

We teach students to think bigger, while not losing sight of the details, so they can build practical solutions that meaningfully improve health outcomes, from the front lines of a major city trauma unit to the most remote corners of Appalachia — one person and one community at a time.

Admissions

First year admission to most of the undergraduate majors offered by the College is open. The College has two programs—social work and nursing—for which students are admitted as pre-majors and then must meet criteria in order to be admitted into the major. At this time, social work and nursing are the only programs that have, in addition to the listed criteria, limited openings in the major. Students must apply and be accepted into these two majors. The baccalaureate nursing completion program is available only to registered nurses (RNs). The college has one undergraduate major, Integrated Healthcare Studies, that does not admit traditional first-year students.  This completion degree is designed for students who have completed at least 60 semester credit hours in an allied health-related discipline. If interested in any of these programs, please read the more detailed description of the specific requirements and application process described either in the school or program descriptions.

If students are already in an academic college at Ohio University and wish to transfer into any program within the College of Health Sciences and Professions (except for social work, integrated healthcare studies, and nursing, which have additional admission requirements), they must have a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.0. Please see School of Nursing  program catalog information for additional nursing admission requirements.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships sponsored by the schools and departments, and the College of Health Sciences and Professions, for qualified undergraduate students are available on an annual basis. Inquiries about the scholarship program should be directed to the scholarship chair of each school/department or the College of Health Sciences and Professions Student Services office.

Academic and Other Requirements

Most majors within the College have requirements that students must meet in order to remain active or progress in a major. Further information about these specific requirements can be found under each program’s description. The college’s policy on internships, practica, and field experiences requires that students be registered for the experience in the same semester(s) the experience takes place. With the exception of students in the RN-to-BSN program, all undergraduate students are required to complete two semester hours in interprofessional healthcare education.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for baccalaureate conferral, each graduation candidate in the College of Health Sciences and Professions must earn at least 120 semester hours of acceptable credit, with a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major; complete the major requirements; fulfill the University’s general education requirements; and complete the residency requirement by earning at least 30 semester hours at Ohio University.

Advising

Upon entering the College of Health Sciences and Professions, students are assigned an academic advisor. Advisors are available to assist students in the preparation of schedules and to discuss academic and career-related topics. However, students are responsible for completing all university, college, and department/school requirements. To assist students in keeping track of progress in completing degree requirements, students can access a DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) report through MyOHIO Student Portal. This report lists the requirements for each degree and details progress toward completing them. If students are interested in determining progress for other or additional majors, they may create a “what if” DARS report through the MyOHIO Student Portal at my.ohio.edu.

Professional Certification or Licensure

If students are majoring in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences , they may begin to pursue a teaching license as an undergraduate, but the requirements for licensure are completed at the master’s level.

Completing the Applied Nutrition  (Dietetics track) option fulfills the academic component for becoming a registered dietitian, but not the internship component. In addition, students completing the dietetics program are eligible to sit for the examination to become a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR). The Environmental Health Science  major fulfills the educational requirements for registration as a sanitarian. Completing the Community and Public Health Major (B.S.)  program enables you to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam. The Child Life Specialist (CLS) concentration of our Human Development and Family Science Major (B.S.)  program is the recommended path for students interested in a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). Students are eligible to apply to take the registered nursing licensure examination after successful completion of the BSN major. These and other specific program requirements can be found in the description of each school or department.

Special Information for Students

The College of Health Sciences and Professions provides opportunities for educational, leadership, and professional development through its honoraries and professional organizations.

Nursing students can be elected to Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honorary. Eta Sigma Gamma, the national health science honorary, has an active chapter in the Department of Social and Public Health. The Ohio University chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) offers opportunities of preprofessional networking and community service in hearing, speech, and language sciences.
