Certificate Overview

The graduate certificate in Performing Arts Medicine is an 11-credit hour (4 courses), entirely online (asynchronous), standalone certificate designed for licensed healthcare professionals who desire added qualification in evaluation, treatment, and clinical research of injuries and conditions commonly encountered by performing artists. Coursework in patient-oriented healthcare delivery specific to performing artists, common injuries and conditions in performing artists, clinical research in performing arts medicine, and nutrition for performance will equip practitioners to effectively deliver care to this unique and underserved patient population. For athletic trainers, the certificate also can be completed in conjunction with the Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree, with the certificate content comprising 26% of the DAT’s coursework requirements.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  1. Develop appropriate methods of healthcare delivery to performing artists.
  2. Evaluate and differentiate the pathoanatomy, pathomechanics, and pathology of injuries and conditions experienced by performing artists.
  3. Locate, critically evaluate, and integrate current research into clinical care plans for injuries and conditions experienced by performing artists.
  4. Discern nutritional needs of performing artists and facilitate appropriate application of performance nutrition recommendations.

Opportunities upon Completion

Professionals who complete the Certificate in Performing Arts Medicine will possess proficiency in meeting the unique healthcare needs of performing artists, including an appropriate mindset for working with this type of patient. The research literature consistently shows performers’ general dissatisfaction with the healthcare profession; thus, certificate holders will be suited for making positive changes in this trend. Moreover, performing artists do not receive the level of access to healthcare services enjoyed by traditional athletes, so many opportunities for establishing such access are available. Based on the breadth of performing arts included in the curriculum, potential employment settings upon program completion include college and university performing arts departments, professional performing arts companies (e.g., dance, music, theatre), professional entertainment (e.g., film, television, live events), sports-affiliated performance groups (e.g., dance team, cheer), and artistically-oriented sports (e.g., rhythmic gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming).

Relationship to Parent Program

For students in the Doctor of Athletic Training program (DA8183), this certificate fulfills the elective requirement.
