Certificate Overview

The Reading Endorsement Certificate is designed to enhance knowledge and instructional skill in reading and writing beyond the foundation required of beginning teachers. This 15-credit hour online graduate program is designed for licensed teachers who wish to add the Reading Endorsement to their current teaching license. If taken within 5 years, these courses also apply towards the Reading Education master’s program. 

Certificate Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to analyze and synthesize lenses, theories and foundations of reading and writing, historically to present.
  • Students will be able to select and conduct appropriate reading and writing assessments to determine students’ (in grades K-3, 4-6 and 7-12) reading and writing strengths and needs.
  • Students will be able to design effective instructional methods, strategies and activities to meet students’  (in grades K-3, 4-6 and 7-12) strengths and needs.
  • Students will be able to create and select appropriate learning materials based on strengths and needs of students.
  • Students will be able to monitor students’ progress and adapt instruction accordingly.

Admission Requirements

  • To be eligible for the Reading Endorsement Certificate, candidates must have taken the required 9-12 hours in the teaching of reading as outlined by the State of Ohio Licensure, with 9 hours for candidates in an Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA program), and 12 hours for candidates in special education, early childhood and elementary education, and middle childhood education.

International Students

An I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
