The goal of the Geography – Geographic Information Science major program is to provide a technical background for geographers interested in working with business, government, or planning agencies. The emphasis of the program is to develop a strong background in the field of geographic information science, as practiced in the fields of cartography, remote sensing, and quantitative methods.

Geography Requirements

Complete 55 hours of approved geography courses, including:

GEOG 101 - Physical Geography Credit Hours: 5
GEOG 121 - Human Geography Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 268 - Introduction to GIS and Mapping Sciences Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 271 - Introduction to Statistics in Geography Credit Hours: 4

One regional course from the following:

GEOG 131 - Globalization and the Developing World Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 132 - World Regional Geography: Industrial World Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 232 - Geography of Ohio Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 234 - Geography of the United States and Canada Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 330 - Geography of Western Europe Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 331 - Geography of Africa Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 333 - Appalachia: Land and People Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 334 - Historical Geography of the United States Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 335 - Geography of Latin America Credit Hours: 4
GEOG 338 - Geography of Southeast Asia Credit Hours: 4

Notes:

At least 30 hours at the 300 level or above. A minimum grade of C- is required for 100- and 200-level geography courses. No more than 5 hours each of 485 or 490/494 can count toward the 55 hours in geography. Hours in 486 do not count toward this total. Work with your advisor to develop a plan to complete the University General Education requirements.

Majors are not permitted to take geography and required courses pass/fail.
