Program Overview

Knowledge of the interdependent world in which we live and work is essential to all citizens. Through pursuit of the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree students develop international competence which involves understanding other peoples and societies well enough to work effectively with them on a broad range of common problems. The degree encourages breadth and depth of language study and calls for the education and training of persons who are knowledgeable of history, world views and cultures other than their own.  The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies – War and Peace is to educate students in security studies from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

There has been a recent and dramatic spike in the demand for graduates in security studies. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security, new emphases on improved intelligence analysis and risk assessments, border control, immigration, heightened proliferation threats in Iran, North Korea, and other countries around the globe, increased attention and hiring in the areas of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency, as well as reconstruction and development in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan, culminate in demand for students well trained in war and peace studies. In addition, our students are well equipped for careers with non-governmental and governmental organizations, multinational corporations, and think tanks, as well as to pursue  graduate degrees in a related fields.

Requirements

The requirements for the major consist of 49 quarter hours in addition to the Language Requirement. Students are required to complete 12 hours of the War and Peace Core courses and 16 hours of the War and Peace Thematic Options courses, 12 of which may be from one discipline.

War and Peace - Thematic Options

Complete 16 hours, only 12 of which may be from one discipline.

Area Studies Options

Complete 4 hours:

Language Requirement

Complete either 3 years of coursework in a single language, 2 years of one language and 1 of another, or demonstrate equivalency. See International Studies advisor to complete process for approval of language/study abroad choice(s). At least one of the languages studied should match area of study (if applicable) and education abroad destination/internship focus. Both breadth and depth of language study are encouraged. The choice of depth ( 3 years of one language) or breadth (2 years of one language plus one of another) should correspond to the logic of each student’s academic goals. Courses taken to satisfy this requirement do not count towards total number of credit hours for the major unless the chosen language does not count towards the College of Arts and Sciences Humanities section. If that is the case, those courses will count towards the Area Studies portion of the major.

Study Abroad or Internship

Students must complete an advisor approved study-abroad or internship experience(s) that reflects major/language of study. Study-abroad or internship must be at least one quarter in length. Students may earn academic coursework towards the major to fulfill this requirement through a study abroad program or by enrolling in INST 495 - Internship  (students are responsible for placement). Students should complete the study abroad experience prior to their senior year to ensure credits earned are transferred before the anticipated graduation date. Preparation for a study abroad experience should begin 2 quarters in advance. Information on study abroad is available at http://www.ohio.edu/educationabroad
