Program Overview
The athletic training program was developed in 1972 and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Ohio’s program promotes high practice standards by providing quality classroom and clinical education experiences. The program also promotes development of the athletic training profession through research and publications. The program also encourages student attendance at professional meetings and involvement with state, district, and national athletic training organizations.
Ohio University’s academic program uses the health care model for developing athletic training student competence. Professional coursework provides students with the ability to combine their knowledge and skills and apply them to professional practice. The athletic training major is a four-year program. The first academic year is preathletic training, followed by three years of professional preparation. Upon graduation students are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.
Clinical education is an exciting part of the learning experience that allows students to be involved in patient care. Working with clinical instructors, students help provide supervised health care services to athletes involved in Ohio University intercollegiate athletics, Ohio University club sports, local high schools sports, and a general population of clinic and hospital patients.
Semester-long internships completed during the senior year are tailored to meet students’ career goals by allowing them to work and learn in the setting of their choice. Students may also participate in collaborative research projects with graduate students and faculty. Program graduates are eligible for national certification (ATC) by the Board of Certification (BOC) and state licensure. In Ohio, licensure (LAT) is granted by the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board.
