Program Overview

In today’s global economy, all businesses–whether large or small–are affected by international competitors and global events. Success in the global marketplace will depend on the capabilities of managers to understand the structures and processes that underlie international business. The international business major is designed to provide this understanding and to develop the requisite competencies of global business leaders.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduates of the international business major are prepared to accept international assignments that arise during their early career path in their primary field of study, as well as to pursue domestic postings that involve a range of international and cross-cultural dimensions. These can include positions involving such activities as exporting and importing, international supply chain management, human resource management, international marketing and sales, international market analysis and entry, and work involving a range of governmental or nongovernmental organizations.

International Business Program Requirements


Complete all of the requirements listed below, some of which may be completed as a part of the College’s Global Requirement:

  • Fluency in a second language at a conversational level or above (for example, satisfactory completion of language instruction through the 2120 level). This requirement may be waived for students who can demonstrate pre-existing bilingual fluency.
  • Completion of at least two international immersion experiences (e.g., study abroad, international internship, Global Consulting Project) or one international experience of substantial length and/or scope (e.g., two-semester study abroad). At least one of the international immersion experiences must be at least 6 to 10 weeks in length.

Complete the following courses:

Non-Business Required Hours


Every COB major must complete a minimum of 42 hours of classwork outside of the College of Business. The non-business required classes count in the 42 hour requirement. The remaining hours consist of elective classes taken outside of the College of Business.

Individual Non-Business Required Courses


Complete the following courses:

Complete one of the following three components:

You may arrange to meet this requirement by completing one of the following:

  1. a Global Consulting Project experience through the College of Business
  2. an approved international experience through the Ohio University Education Abroad Office
  3. an approved international experience through the Global Leadership Center

3. Foreign Language Component


Complete a foreign language through at least 2120.

If your major is finance or accounting, you must take ECON 3050. If you have any other major, you must take a 3000- or 4000-level economics course except ECON 3000 or ECON 3810.

Internship Requirement


Complete 3 hours of internship credit.
