Program Overview

The Middle Childhood Education program includes six majors with academic specializations in any two of the following content specializations: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Successful completion of the program and passing scores on PRAXIS II exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) will qualify you for an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license. This major will prepare you to teach Mathematics and Science in grades 4-9 in Ohio.

Admission Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Most courses during the freshman year should be selected to meet the requirements of General Education, Tier I and Tier II. Requirements for admission to Professional Education include: successful completion of 30 semester hours with a 2.75 GPA or higher, a Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher, a Tier I Freshmen Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher, and the following: EDTE 1500 - Introduction to Teacher Education and PSY 1010 - General Psychology.

Middle Childhood Education Requirements


Your program is designed to meet requirements in three areas: General Education, Professional Education, and Content for the Teaching Fields.

One or more of your requirements in content for the teaching fields will also qualify to meet a General Education Tier II requirement.  You may partially satisfy both requirements with a single course.  You are always welcome to meet with an academic advisor for assistance in selecting General Education Tier II courses that also meet requirements in content in the teaching fields. 

MCE Preprofessional Education


Complete the following courses:

MCE Professional Internship in Teaching


The following are taken concurrently to constitute the Professional Internship in teaching. Applications for admission to the Professional Internship are due on December 1 of the year prior to the year you plan to begin your internship. All Professional Internships, as well as Early Field Experiences, must be completed in classrooms in the middle level grades: 4th thru 9th grades.  For additional information, contact the Office of Professional Internships, McCracken Hall 124.

Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement: Language Arts and Social Studies (optional)


Ohio University has been approved by the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio Educator Standards Board to offer the Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement.  The Endorsement is optional, but available to candidates for the Middle Childhood teaching license who wish to add an additional teaching field, or two additional teaching fields, for grades 4 through 6 only. 

Generalist Endorsement: Language Arts


Complete any of the following courses with no grade below B, for a total of 6 semester credit hours. No transfer credit will be accepted. Any substitution must be approved by the chair of the Middle Childhood program. In addition, you must achieve a passing score on the PRAXIS II exam for Middle Childhood Language Arts:

Generalist Endorsement: Social Studies


Complete any of the following courses with no grade below B, for a total of 6 semester credit hours. No transfer credit will be accepted.
