Program Overview

The Honors Tutorial College (HTC) studio art B.F.A. program balances a commitment to breadth and rigor with an opportunity for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to explore current and fundamental issues creatively. This program offers exceptional students the opportunity to study the many aspects of studio art in one-on-one relationships with faculty members. Maximum opportunities will be afforded for the student to progress well beyond the material found in conventional courses. The primary purpose of the tutorial program is to serve as preparation for graduate study. Students will receive a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Honors Tutorial College.

The B.F.A. program in studio art is a four-year program requiring a student to take one tutorial each semester, two years of a language, collateral studies, and upper-division studio art courses. In addition, the student is expected to apply to one of the six fine arts areas in the School of Art: ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture at the end of their sophomore year. Upper division classes and tutorials will be concentrated in the area in which the student is earning the B.F.A. This enables the student to acquire the full range of skills necessary to successfully continue in graduate study. A student will have excellent opportunities for intensive study with the studio artists in the School of Art.

To earn a bachelor’s degree in the Honors Tutorial College, a student must fulfill all the academic requirements of the program of study, maintain a 3.5 GPA (grade point average) in the courses that are required by the program of study, and have at least a 3.5 overall GPA.

Tutorials/Courses/Thesis

Tutorials during the first three years have fixed content, with the goal of exposing the Honors Tutorial College student to many different methodologies and approaches. The first year of tutorials for both the HTC art history and HTC studio art are designed to complement the art history survey course AH 2110, AH 2120, and AH 2130 (Non Western Art History) which all HTC students are required to audit in addition to participating in their tutorial. These tutorials are Ah 2970T and 2980T. The second and third year tutorials are based on specialized content offered by School of Art faculty members in both art and art history. Students will register for either the AH or ART prefix depending on their course of study. These small, individualized tutorial seminars foster community, which is important for the School of Art, and permit the students to work closely with one another. There are also individualized meetings scheduled with the tutor and the director of study as well. The final year is devoted to the thesis/project, with the student working closely with 1-2 thesis advisors or a thesis advisor and director of study as they conceive and write their thesis.
