Program Overview

Today’s dynamic and highly competitive businesses require energetic and capable leaders who can add value and create high performance at all levels of enterprise responsibility. The major in management and strategic leadership is designed to create the foundations of knowledge and personal capability requisite to lifelong professional learning and career-long success in business leadership.

Success in strategic business leadership requires a broad base of conceptual knowledge, personal skills, and competencies. The required courses ensure a variety of rich developmental experiences that can include community service learning, individual leadership and emotional intelligence assessments, case analysis, research projects, team-based active learning projects, and guest speakers, in addition to traditional classroom lectures and discussions. The major places a strong emphasis on written and oral communications skills, teamwork, and personal initiative.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Students completing the management and strategic leadership major are prepared to enter management training programs or, when taken in combination with another functional major, are prepared to advance more quickly to managerial roles in their disciplines.

Management and Strategic Leadership Requirements


Complete the following:

Management Electives


Choose two three-hour courses from approved MGT electives at or above the 3000 level. Students are encouraged to choose electives that fit well together.  One recommended sequence, for students interested in possible careers in Human Resources Management, would be to choose MGT 4580 from the choice of two above, and to take MGT 3300 Introduction to Human Resource Management and MGT 4370 Strategic Talent Management to fulfill the two Management electives.  Check with the Management Department for other suggested sequences as they are developed.

Every COB major must complete a minimum of 42 hours of classwork outside of the College of Business. The non-business required classes count in the 42 hour requirement. The remaining hours consist of elective classes taken outside of the College of Business.
