Program Overview

The modern language programs for educators include French, German, and Spanish. Regardless of the college of the university from which you will graduate, if you wish to be licensed through Ohio University to teach Spanish in Ohio, you must complete the following program and earn passing scores on the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) exam, the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT), and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA). This major prepares you for an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license that qualifies you to teach Spanish in grades Pre-K thru 12.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, Lindley Hall. Admission to Teacher Candidacy is required before taking any education courses at the 2000-level or higher. Requirements for admission to Teacher Candidacy include:

  • successful completion of 30 hours with a 3.00 GPA or higher,
  • a Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
  • a Tier I Freshmen Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
  • EDTE 1500 Introduction to Teacher Education  with a grade of C (2.0) or higher, and
  • PSY 1010 General Psychology  with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.

Generally, you apply for admission to Teacher Candidacy during the second semester of your freshman year. Athens campus students must attend a group meeting arranged by the Office of Student Affairs, Lindley Hall, prior to submitting application for Admission to Teacher Candidacy.

Admission to Advanced Standing in Teacher Candidacy is required before taking any education courses at the 3000 level or higher. Applications for admission to Advanced Standing in Teacher Candidacy should be submitted a semester after which students will have earned at least 60 hours in the major.

Regional campus students should check with their offices of student affairs or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.
