Degree Title: Master of Science

Program Name and Number: Mechanical Engineering - MS7257

Department/Unit: Department of Mechanical Engineering

Delivery Mode: Athens Campus

Program Mission: Our departmental mission is to provide an intellectual environment and educational experience from which students and faculty contribute to society and to the mechanical engineering profession through research, teaching, and service. Our graduate program has a rigorous yet flexible curriculum which includes advanced engineering analysis and courses in both mechanical systems and thermal-fluid systems as well as numerous technical electives to ensure students have both breadth and depth of knowledge and skills.  The mission of the graduate program is to build upon the foundational coursework to train graduate students through individual mentoring on a thesis or project to be excellent researchers, able to plan and conduct studies that advance the knowledge base in their area of work, and effectively communicate their results through written and oral means to a diverse audience.

Program Learning Objectives: The objectives of the graduate program of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Ohio University are to (a) prepare graduates for advanced careers in the engineering profession including doctoral studies, post-doctoral experiences and technical leadership positions, (b) develop the ability to effectively communicate graduate-level engineering concepts and applications, and (c) instill advanced engineering research and problem solving skills.

Program Overview:  Our advanced degree programs in mechanical engineering are designed to help you sharpen your technical focus and prepare you to succeed as a professional engineer with the knowledge and skills to create for good.  Students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering have the opportunity to work on research with our renowned faculty on significant projects with access to state-of-the-art equipment.  This research focuses primarily areas of energy and the environment, materials and manufacturing, and bioengineering. An advanced degree in mechanical engineering can lead to careers in many fields: design, patent law, manufacturing, research and development, biomedical engineering, technical consulting, product testing, technical sales, administration, and higher education are some of the most common.

Opportunities for Graduates: Men and women graduates from the M.E. program at Ohio University have gone on to work for leading companies including Boeing, Daimler Chrysler, General Electric, Goodyear, Honda, NASA, American Electric Power, Ariel, Caterpillar, Cummins, and Naval Air Systems command, among many others. Graduates have also undertaken doctoral studies at OU and other leading research universities.

Graduation Requirements: The minimum requirements for the thesis program are 23 semester-hours of graduate coursework and 9 semester-hours of thesis work.  For the non-thesis option, the minimum requirements are 29 semester-hours of graduate coursework and 3 semester-hours of research project work. During the first semester in the program, each student will develop a specific plan of study in consultation with his/her advisor. The program of study must include fundamental courses in mechanical systems and thermo-fluids systems. Required coursework also includes ME 6970 (Engineering Analysis and Numerical Methods), ME 6020 (Technical Writing) and ME 5800 (Graduate Colloquium).

Admission Requirements: The basic requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Applicants holding degrees in closely related fields or from non-accredited engineering institutions may be required to compensate for deficiencies with additional coursework prescribed by the department. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test (recommended: 150 verbal/ 155 quantitative).  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for applicants whose native language is not English (required minimum score of 80; IELTS requires a minimum of 6.5 on all parts).

Three letters of recommendation are required from persons who can attest to the applicant’s academic and research aptitude.  Undergraduate grade point average (GPA), GRE and TOEFL scores, and engineering accomplishments are all considerations for admission as well as awards of tuition scholarships and stipends.
