Program Overview
To receive a B.S.Ed. in Special Education and licensure as an Intervention Specialist, you must complete one of the professional preparation programs for teaching students with special needs and receive passing scores relevant Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) and a Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). Students should also use the four-year plan on the program website and/or consult with their advisor about scheduling as early as possible. Mild to Moderate majors are advised to complete content courses in science, and/or social studies and/or mathematics to pass the Middled Childhood (or OAE) content tests in addition to the reading OAE to have 2 HQT areas upon graduation. All licensure programs are subject to any changes in requirements as set forth by the Ohio Educator Licensure Board.
Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
As with all majors in Education, candidates must meet the requirements for Teacher Candidacy. In addition, those wishing to enter special education programs must also submit an application for Selective Admission in Special Education during Fall semester of the sophomore year and be accepted and eligible (meet all requisites) for entry into their junior year Special Education Block 2 courses.
Enrollment in these programs is limited to promote quality instruction, appropriate field placement, and effective advising. The selective admission process for Special Education includes application for admission to Teacher Candidacy, review of your academic record (minimum GPA of 3.0) and dispositions, and your professional statement. Admission applications are available on the Web and should be returned to the Office of Student Affairs in Lindley Hall. The application deadline is posted on the e-News and is typically on month prior to priority registration week.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program and passing scores on the state licensing exams, individuals are eligible to hold K-12 public school teaching positions as an intervention specialist. Further, many individuals are qualified to work in agencies serving families, young children and those who provide services to adults with disabilities.
