Program Overview

The dance history and theory minor focuses on the growing field of dance studies that uses a dance-based theoretical perspective and other movement practices to analyze within larger cultural contexts. This minor integrates theory and practice as a means of heightening scholarly inquiry.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

To become a minor in dance history and theory you must have sophomore standing, a 3.0 GPA in your major discipline or field of study and meet with an academic advisor in the Dance Division. No audition is required.

Change of Program Policy

Upon admission to the minor in dance history and theory appropriate forms must be completed by the student in the Dance Division office or the College of Fine Arts office.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements and requirements stated above.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

This concentrated study helps prepare students with a specialized dance emphasis for employment or graduate study in dance studies, arts administration, dance ethnology, journalism or criticism, and dance in film or video.

Minor Hours Requirement


The dance: history and theory minor requires a minimum of 21 hours.

Studio Dance Technique


Complete one year minimum of studio dance techniques at the 2000-level or above. You may choose from modern, ballet, jazz or African dance. Prerequisite courses must be met and are not part of the minor. Studio dance techniques must be taken in sequence.
