Program Overview

The Middle Childhood Education program includes six majors with academic specializations in any two of the following content specializations: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Successful completion of the program and passing scores on the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) will qualify you for an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license. This major will prepare you to teach Language Arts and Science in grades 4-9 in Ohio.

Admission Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, McCracken Hall.

Regional campus students should check with the office of student affairs or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

Admission to Teacher Candidacy

Candidates must be admitted to Teacher Candidacy before taking any education courses numbered 2000 and above.

Generally, candidates apply for admission to Teacher Candidacy during the second semester of your first year. Athens campus candidates must attend a group meeting arranged by Patton College Office of Student Affairs. Regional campus students should check with Student Services or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met during the first 30 hours of enrollment. These requirements are subject to change.

  1. Completion of 30 semester hours of credit with an overall GPA of 3.00. No education courses may be included in the GPA.
  2. Completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better in each course:
    1. Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
    2. Tier I Freshman Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
    3. EDTE 1000  - Introduction to Teacher Education with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
    4. PSY 1010  - General Psychology with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
  3. Satisfactory performance on the PRAXIS CORE (Academic Skills for Educators) Test. You must achieve scores of 156 or above in reading, 150 or above in mathematics, and 162 or above in writing OR be exempt from the test because of a standardized test score. You must have achieved a composite score of 21 or better on the ACT and/or 990 or better on the SAT to be exempt. You may not enroll in education courses until this requirement is met.
  4. Submission of the results of a background check through BCI & FBI.
  5. Submission of results of the tuberculosis skin test (administered by Campus Care or other appropriate office).
  6. Screening and recommendation by a representative appointed by faculty.
  7. GPA may be considered in admission decisions for transfer students.

Admission to Advanced Standing

Candidates must be admitted to Advanced Standing before taking any education courses numbered 3000 or above. Candidates must maintain an overall GPA of 2.75, as well as a 2.75 GPA in each teaching field for which licensure is sought to continue to take education courses numbered 3000 or above. Methods courses can be taken no more than twice. Failure to obtain a satisfactory grade can result in dismissal from the program.

Generally, candidates apply for Advanced Standing in Teacher Candidacy at the end of the second semester of the sophomore year. Athens campus students must attend a group meeting arranged by Patton College Office of Student Affairs, and regional campus students should check with Student Services or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

  1. General requirements
    1. Completion of 60 semester hours of credit with an overall GPA of 2.75.
    2. An accumulative GPA of 2.75 in each teaching field for which a licensure is sought.
    3. Satisfactory reports from:
      1. The Office of Community Standards
      2. Faculty
  2. Specific requirements for Middle Childhood Education
    1. Candidates will not be admitted to Advanced Standing until all required courses are completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
    2. Completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of C in each:
      1. EDTE 2000 
      2. EDTE 2010 
      3. EDTE 2020 
    3. A 2.75 GPA in each teaching field for which licensure is being sought.

Middle Childhood Education Requirements


Your program is designed to meet requirements in three areas: General Education, Teacher Candidacy, and Content for the Teaching Fields.

One or more of your requirements in content for the teaching fields will also qualify to meet a General Education Tier II requirement.  You may partially satisfy both requirements with a single course.  You are always welcome to meet with an academic advisor for assistance in selecting General Education Tier II courses that also meet requirements in content in the teaching fields. 

MCE Pre-Teacher Candidacy


Complete the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better in each:

MCE Professional Internship in Teaching


The following are taken concurrently to constitute the Professional Internship in Teaching. Applications for admission to the Professional Internship are due on November 1 of the year prior to the year you plan to begin your internship. All Professional Internships, as well as Early Field Experiences, must be completed in classrooms in the middle level grades: 4th through 9th grades.  For additional information, contact the Office of Clinical Experiences, Lindley Hall.

Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement: Mathematics & Social Studies (optional)


Ohio University has been approved by the Ohio Departemnt of Higher Education and the Ohio Educator Standards Board to offer the Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement.  The Endorsement is optional, but available to candidates for the Middle Childhood teaching license who wish to add an additional teaching field, or two additional teaching fields, for grades 4 through 6 only.

Generalist Endorsement: Mathematics


Complete the following courses with no grade below B. No transfer credit will be accepted. Any substitution must be approved by the chair of the Middle Childhood program. In addition, you must achieve a passing score on the Ohio Assessment for Educators for Middle Childhood Mathematics.

Generalist Endorsement: Social Studies


Complete the following courses with no grade below B. No transfer credit will be accepted. Any substitution must be approved by the chair of the Middle Childhood program. In addition, you must achieve a passing score on the Ohio Assessment for Educators for Middle Childhood Social Studies.
