Program Overview: The intention of the Ph.D. program is to develop academic and professional leaders who produce scholarship, influence policy, and train media professionals around the world. The School of Media Arts and Studies and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism jointly offer doctoral programs in Mass Communication. Applicants indicate which of the schools fits their research interests and apply there. In the School of Media Arts and Studies doctoral students specialize in research areas related to international media, media industries & management, or media studies in society, technology and culture. Expected time to degree with full-time study is three years.

Program Learning Outcomes:  Graduates of the program are expected to demonstrate superior research skills and participate in submissions to refereed journals, superior analytic and interpretive skills, an effective scholarly writing ability, and superior understanding of theory and practice as they pertain to media.

Graduation Requirements:  The following requirements must be satisfied to graduate.

  • Coursework: Total minimum semester hours required: 90 hours (may include transfer credits from master’s degree)
  • Area of specialization: at least 16 hours
  • Secondary area: at least 8 hours
  • Research tools: 8 hours, minimum two courses
  • Additional courses
  • Comprehensive exam

Culminating Experience:  Dissertation

Admission Requirements:

  • University requirements, earned M.A./M.S. degree with 3.0 GPA
  • MDIA Ph.D. does not require GRE
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Writing sample
  • Personal statement of purpose

International Students:  This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to the program.
