Program Overview

Ohio University Lancaster and Ohio University Southern offer a two-year program of study leading to an Associate in Applied Science with a major in electronic media. The program is founded on the belief that through intensive individualized instruction in a hands-on atmosphere, you can prepare in only two years for a beginning position in the electronic media field of audio, video and multimedia (radio or TV stations, cable TV, corporate communications, advertising agencies, video/sports production companies, or multimedia production houses).

Along with those who want a production-intensive education, high school graduates who wish further preparation in order to begin their college careers in the School of Media Arts and Studies on the Athens campus can benefit from the associate program. The program presents students with the opportunity to sharpen your skills before relocating to the School of Media Arts and Studies on the Athens campus. More than 90 percent of those students who complete the associate’s degree and then relocate to Athens secure a bachelor’s degree. (A 3.0 GPA is expected for relocation to Athens.) Others might wish to pursue the Bachelors of Technical and Applied Studies or communication studies major programs on the regional campuses, or might immediately move into communications positions.

The audio-video studios feature multitrack audio recording, radio operations, TV studios and digital video production and post production equipment. PC and MAC labs give multimedia students the latest in software for graphic design and web development. The hands-on facilities, broadly based curriculum, and small classes, have proved invaluable for students who want to obtain a full view of the field of electronic media.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Recent graduates are now working throughout the United States in the electronic media industry. Employment opportunities may include broadcast radio/television, cable television, advertising agencies, production houses, corporate communications, new media/web based companies, government communications, medical and health media, christian broadcasting, media ministry, live event audio-video, sports productions, educational media, or freelance. Students are also prepared to continue their academic studies in a baccalaureate program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the electronic media major, students will be able to:

  • Trace the evolution of the technological and operational maturation of radio, television, cable television/direct broadcast services, internet and new media.
  • Trace the evolution of the regulatory organizations that shape media.
  • Understand how electronic media shape society.
  • Recognize and define terminology used in electronic media.
  • Identify, discuss and practice applied media aesthetic elements of visualization, light color, dimensions of 2-3D, motion and sound), and incorporate them into planning and production of media projects.
  • Gain knowledge and be able to demonstrate practical basic audio, video and multimedia theory.
  • Demonstrate the use of writing and storytelling elements for creative content for electronic media.
  • Demonstrate an understanding the function and operation of various types of video, audio and multimedia equipment functions and software.
  • Distinguish the different production approaches and types of audio, video and multimedia projects.
  • Identify media industries and career opportunities locally, nationally and international.
  • Become familiar with aspects of electronic media business by examining roles of electronic media marketing and promotional strategies employed in the industry.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various electronic media advertising.

Requirements

 

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through prior learning assessment may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate’s degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.
