Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Organizational Communication is intended for working students who are seeking an advanced academic degree that focuses on the critical examination and understanding of the role of communication within the processes of organizing, decision making, and problem solving. This part-time program is offered entirely online. Students may choose to take one (1) or two (2) classes per semester. Students enrolling in one (1) class per semester can expect to complete the program in approximately seven semesters. Students choosing to enroll in two (2) classes per semester can potentially complete the program in approximately four semesters.

Program Learning Outcomes 

Upon completion of this program, students should be able to:

  • Recognize communication issues that impact organizational effectiveness
  • Describe and apply theories and principles to analyze communication issues in a variety of contemporary organizational contexts
  • Conduct reviews of scholarly and existing research in communication studies
  • Demonstrate advanced written communication skills
  • Apply quantitative methods for analyzing communication issues
  • Demonstrate effective team communication skills

Admission Requirements 

Applicants whose qualifications satisfy all of the following criteria are reviewed for admission to the Master of Arts in Organizational Communication program:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience (preferred)
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (NOTE: Those with a GPA lower than 3.0 are also required to submit GRE scores)

The application requires three (3) letters of recommendation from those who can comment on the applicant’s academic ability and/or work experience. Applicants must also submit a current resume and a statement of professional goals.

International Students

This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours as follows. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 with no grades below a B- in any classes counted toward the degree.

Culminating Experience


Students are required to complete a minimum of 6 hours of capstone credit. Students must select one of the following options:

  • ePortfolio (includes an application paper, case study analysis, and a training module)
  • Comprehensive examinations
  • Applied research project
  • Thesis
