Certificate Overview
We have designed the Professional Instructional Design Certificate (PIDC) to build professionals’ instructional design skills. Higher education requires instructional design skills and experience to support faculty. K12 is following this trend and industry has long been at the forefront of integrating designed educational experiences into their training systems. We offer the PIDC in a 100% online format to optimize flexibility and convenience for participants from a broad geographic area. The program serves those who desire to transition into the field of instructional design. We have designed the certificate for individuals from a variety of backgrounds who seek to design instruction for their specific area of expertise as well as those who wish to focus on online learning in general.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
Students in this program will:
- demonstrate knowledge of instructional design principles and process.
- demonstrate knowledge of project planning and management.
- demonstrate the ability to marry the ID process with project management strategies for relevant phases
- develop and justify a project blueprint which includes scope, time, and cost as well as risks, issues and constraints
Students will also learn principles of Instructional Design, including these ISTE Standards:
2.a. Demonstrate the implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences addressing content standards and student technology standards.
2.b. Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences using a variety of research-based, learner-centered instructional strategies and assessment tools to address the diverse needs and interests of all students.
2.c. Use technology to help students assume professional roles, research real-world problems, collaborate with others, and produce products that are meaningful and useful to a wide audience.
2.d. Design technology-enhanced learning experiences emphasizing creativity, higher-order thinking skills and processes, and mental habits of mind (e.g., critical thinking, metacognition, and self-regulation).
2.e. Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences using differentiation, including adjusting content, process, product, and learning environment based upon student readiness levels, learning styles, interests, and personal goals.
2.f. Demonstrate research-based best practices in instructional design when planning technology-enhanced learning experiences.
2.g. Demonstrate the use of technology tools and resources to continuously assess student learning and technology literacy by applying a rich variety of formative and summative assessments aligned with content and student technology standards.
2.h. Demonstrate the use of technology tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
3. Demonstrate the use of Digital-Age Learning Environments.
Technology coaches create and support effective digital-age learning environments to maximize the learning of all students. 3A, 3C, 3F & 3G.
Opportunities upon Completion
Many certificate holders pursue opportunities in government, education and industry. The Professional Instructional Design Certificate prepares professionals with the knowledge, skills and experiences to work independently and collaboratively in this fast growing occupation.
Admission Requirements
No additional requirements beyond university graduate admission requirements.
International Students
This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
Completion Requirements
Students must complete 2 courses and 1 workshop for a minimum of 9 credit hours.
