Certificate Overview
This program leads to a graduate certificate in Electronic Navigation.
The Graduate Certificate in Electronic Navigation can be completed in one year by taking a total of four courses over fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students can take a longer time at their discretion.
Per Ohio University graduate standards of work, only courses with a grade of C or above can fulfill the requirements of this certificate. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B average) or higher, calculated from the four courses listed below, is required to complete this certificate.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
- Students will achieve mastery of the fundamentals of inertial navigation systems
- Student will achieve mastery of the fundamentals of satellite navigation systems
- Students will achieve the ability to design and analyze the performance of integrated navigation systems, including accuracy, dynamics, and reliability
Opportunities upon Completion
For nearly 50 years, Electrical Engineering faculty in the Avionics Engineering Center at Ohio University have taught graduate courses in electronic navigation to degree seeking graduate students. There is a rapidly growing need for structured training in electronic navigation at the graduate level without requiring a full Master’s degree program.
One need look no farther than a smart phone to see the maturation of electronic navigation technology. Virtually every smart phone on the market today contains not only a satellite navigation receiver, but also accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers. Some personal electronic devices (PEDs) even have air pressure sensors for the independent determination of altitude. Such technology was pioneered originally for the aerospace industry (which continues to depend upon it), but with PEDs the “installed user base” is now hundreds of millions instead of tens of thousands. The need for professionals trained in electronic navigation is thus abundantly clear, and rapidly increasing.
Demand for students trained in electronic navigation is growing rapidly in diverse fields, including: cell phones and personal electronics, civilian aerospace applications, defense applications, automotive applications, precision agriculture applications, and autonomous vehicles applications, including both land and aerial vehicles.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the electronic navigation certificate program requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Application materials for program code ND7272 should include
- Resume/CV
- Official transcripts
International Students
This certificate program alone does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate. However, this certificate can be completed as an integral part of the full time campus Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MS7253), and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to that degree program.
Completion Requirements
Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Electronic Navigation requires 12 total credit hours, as follows:
