Program Overview
The MTESOL program takes a broad perspective on English language teaching. Depending on students’ chosen career path, the curriculum prepares graduates to teach English as a foreign language to different learner populations, from elementary to post-secondary schools. Requiring only two semesters of full-time study, this program permits participants to earn an MTESOL degree within a relatively short time to begin or return to teaching immediately thereafter.
Program Learning Outcomes
After completing the MTESOL program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of various domains of the English language (e.g., phonological, lexical, grammatical, discoursal) in relation to second language development.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key theories, teaching methods, and issues in English language teaching.
- Evaluate and apply current language teaching approaches and develop teaching materials appropriate to a particular teaching context.
- Articulate a coherent statement of teaching philosophy grounded in current language learning and teaching theories.
- Use technology effectively in teaching and materials development.
- Communicate effectively for professional purposes.
Admission Requirements
- A US-equivalent bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Transcripts from post-secondary educational institutions
- A clear statement of purpose
- Three letters of recommendation (at least one professional referee)
- For domestic applicants: 2 years of college-level foreign language requirement
- For international applicants: 100 or higher on a TOEFL-iBT, or 6.5 or higher in every band on IELTS
International Students
A TOEFL-iBT score of 100 or higher or an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher in every band for non-native English speakers is required.. This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
Graduation Requirements
Complete a minimum of 31 credit hours with a minimum of a B grade in each course. Students may transfer up to 8 credit hours to cover required courses, as approved by the program director.

Culminating Experience
As a culminating experience, students’ overall learning in the MTESOL progam will be assessed by using the e-Portfolio which is developed in LING 6970: Professional Portfolio Seminar, the graduate culminating experience seminar. The e-Portfolio consists of the following:
- CV
- Cover Letter
- Teaching Philosophy
- Two Sample Lesson Plans
- Professional Development Documentation
- Reflection Paper
- One 7-min Teaching Demonstration Video
