Program Overview

This program is 100% online and will require a minimum of 42 credit hours beyond the master’s degree in one of two tracks (described in the Program Focus section). Full-time (9 cr) students can complete the program in 4 semesters. Part-time enrollment is permitted.

Students follow one of two academic tracks: (1) an advanced clinical practice track where clinicians use research to inform their clinical decisions and (2) a clinical research track that prepares clinicians to collect and analyze data. The base program consists of 17 hours of core coursework, 13 credit hours in the Clinical Practice Track or 13 credit hours in the Clinical Research Track, and 12 credit hours of electives.

Related Certificates

Students admitted into the program may choose to complete the Clinical Informatics Certificate  (CTCING).

Students who complete the Dublin-based Athletic Training Residency  (CTATRG) can apply those credits to the DAT.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduate of a CAATE-accredited master’s degree program
                  -or-
    Be a credentialed athletic trainer and possess a master’s degree in a related area
  • Have a minimum master’s degree GPA of 3.0
  • Be certified as an athletic trainer by the Board of Certification, Inc. or equivalent
  • Be appropriately credentialed in the state in which they reside.
  • Possess a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
  • Each semester the student must demonstrate evidence of full-or part-time work experience as an athletic trainer (except for the summer if applicable). The scope of employment can include clinical practice, teaching, research, business, and/or administrative responsibilities. Gaps in employment must be justified in order to seek a waiver of this requirement (e.g., Family Medical Leave).

International Students

This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 72 credit hours after the bachelor’s degree to earn the Doctor of Athletic Training degree, of which at least 42 hours are required in DAT coursework. Up to 12 hours may be considered for transfer credit, subject to evaluation by the program director.

Special Requirements


The 12 elective hours may also include courses to supplement student preparation or as designated for a particular placement track as determined by the program director.

Culminating Experience


Students in the clinical practice track will complete a capstone project that is applicable to their work setting. The capstone may involve a systematic review, meta-analysis, quality improvement project, or case study. The clinical research track will include original research that involves data collection and analysis resulting in a manuscript that is suitable for publication in a professional journal.
