Program Overview

The French and Francophone Studies Certificate program will provide a significant interdisciplinary study and learning experience about France and the Francophone world. This program views the French and Francophone world through the lenses of history, language, literature, law, culture, society, environmental science, and politics. The program will focus on issues of coloniality, postcoloniality, decolonization, immigration and emigration that have grown in significance in all of these regions of the world. In addition to providing a foundational classroom experience, two additional exciting features of this program are the inclusion of optional education abroad and service-learning components. Education abroad experiences to include a menu of relatively short (2-4 weeks) modules to many of the areas in France and the Francophone world listed above. The inclusion of New Orleans provides an opportunity to create a service learning aspect to the program, while also enabling students to travel outside of Ohio to explore the French influence on the United States. It is important to note that the educational opportunities away from the Ohio University campus are encouraged, but are not required to complete the certificate program.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Undergraduate students who complete the certificate will be prepared for a number of different career paths, depending on the elective coursework they pursue. For example, those who take FR 3215 (French for Business), will be in a position to take advantage of opportunities in private enterprises that routinely work with the Francophone world and require French language skills. Those who take approved literature or political science courses will be well positioned to apply for graduate programs. Students who complete the certificate may also be interested in pursuing programs where they can teach English abroad, such as the Teaching Assistant Program in France. Completing the language coursework required for the certificate would also mean a student is eligible for North and West African Peace Corps missions.
