Program Overview

Ohio University Chillicothe, Ohio University Lancaster, and Ohio University Southern offer a two-year program of study in business management technology (BMT) leading to the Associate in Applied Business degree. The program offers a balance of theory and practice suitable for students interested in careers in supervision. Courses offered take a management approach to the functional areas of business operations including human resource management, marketing, operations, supervision, planning, and distribution. The principles of continuous quality improvement are used throughout the program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Describe and explain the functional areas of business.
  • Demonstrate business thinking skills by applying general business concepts to strategic decision-making.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills by exploring issues and ideas before accepting of formulating conclusions.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

The BMT program is intended to prepare students for supervising or entry level management positions in a number of industry sectors. Students have opportunities to develop analysis skills, problem solving, team building, and business presentations. Industry sectors that can benefit from supervisors who understand and practice these skills include manufacturing, retail, finance and banking, service, distribution, small business, health care, and not-for-profit. Students are also prepared to continue their academic studies in several baccalaureate programs, such as the Business Studies major (B.S.B.) .

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through prior learning assessment may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University BRICKS  requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.

Total Hours Required


The Associate of Applied Business degree with business management technology major requires a minimum of 60 hours.
