Certificate Overview
The Dublin-based Athletic Training Residency in Pediatrics requires 17 credit hours of graduate course work in sports medicine coupled with intensive clinical experience as a full-time licensed athletic trainer. The program is one calendar year in length, consisting of three academic semesters delivered in-person.

Opportunities upon Completion
The Athletic Training Residency in Pediatrics (CTATRG) in Dublin offers an advanced practice residency for athletic trainers. Considering nearly 25% of athletic trainers work with a patient population under the age of 19 (https://members.nata.org/members1/salarysurvey2016/results.cfm), a program offering advanced course work and mentored clinical practice focused upon pediatrics and adolescent sports medicine issues provides newly credentialed athletic trainers the opportunity to enter their careers with the necessary training and experience to step into leadership roles providing athlete-related health care in primary and secondary schools as well as recreational and youth sport leagues. Course work and clinical experiences will address six core competences: (1) patient care and procedural skills, (2) medical knowledge, (3) practice-based learning and improvement (4) interpersonal communication skills, (5) professionalism, and (6) system-based practice.
Certificate Relationship to Parent Degree Program
The parent program of the stackable certificate, Athletic Training Residency in Pediatrics, is the Clinical Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree. Neither enrollment in nor completion of the DAT degree is required to complete the Athletic Training Residency in Pediatrics Certificate, but completing the certificate in Residency does fulfill 6 of 15 courses towards the DAT.
To be admitted to the Doctor in Athletic Training (DAT), a candidate must have a master’s degree and be a graduate of a CAATE-accredited athletic training program. Those residents who elect to apply the 17 credit hours earned as required by the certificate (CTATRG) would have up to six calendar years (18 semesters) to complete the remaining 25 credit hours for completion of the DAT.
Admission Requirements
- Be a graduate of a CAATE-accredited athletic training program
- Be certified as an athletic trainer by the NATA Board of Certification, Inc.
- Be eligible for licensure from the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (across all institutions attended)
- Upload a Resume/CV with 3 references along with the application
- Submit official GRE test scores along with the application (this requirement is waived for the 2022-23 application year)
- Be employed as a full-time resident athletic trainer with OhioHealth Sports Medicine
- Meet specified health status requirements delineated in the Resident Handbook
- Provide proof of FBI/BCI background checks free from felony offenses and disqualifying misdemeanors
International Students
An I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate.
