Program Overview

The CSP program is a full time, cohort-based program. The curriculum integrates theory and practice, blending courses in student development theory, student affairs administration, counseling, and higher education with hands-on experience in student affairs offices at Ohio University as well as neighboring institutions.

All students in the CSP program include a graduate assistantship (GA) in Student Affairs or another academic or administrative office at Ohio University. Admission to the CSP program and GA assignments are made independently. Admission decisions are made by the HESA faculty, while all decisions concerning GA positions are made by university administrators following our Interview Weekend. Interview Weekend takes place in Athens, Ohio each February.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will comprehend realistically the different aspects of the student affairs profession.

Students will analyze fundamental student affairs competency areas, including the structure and function of higher education, student development theories, diversity, and organization/administration, and assessment/evaluation.
Students will apply leadership skills, interpersonal/helping skills, and scholarship skills to be student affairs professionals.
Students will integrate their developing professional networks, their mentorship experiences, their assistantship/practicum experiences, and their academic experiences into their own unique career development.

Admission Requirements

A portfolio that includes a goal statement, transcripts of all previous post-secondary coursework, and three letters of recommendation. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required. Priority consideration is given to applications completed by January 1.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Complete 48 credit hours as follows:

Elective Courses

Complete an additional 6 hours of EDHE or EDCP courses at the 5000-level or higher.

Culminating Experience

Students must complete a capstone project consisting of a literature review. The topic is one of interest to the student and relevant to the issues, problems, and trends of the major area of study.
