Program Overview

The Master of Arts degree in applied linguistics offers a strong theoretical foundation and research experience in applied linguistics with practical experience in language instruction and prepares students for doctoral studies and professional careers in this field. The completion of the degree with full-time attendance normally takes two academic years.

Program Learning Outcomes

After completing the MA Applied Linguistics program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the linguistic systems of English discourse, grammar, and phonology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key theories, teaching and research methods, techniques, and issues in applied linguistics.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and synthesize primary and secondary sources and design research related to applied linguistics.
  • Articulate a coherent statement of teaching philosophy.
  • Use technology effectively in research, teaching, and materials development.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and oral language for academic and professional purposes.

Opportunities for Graduates

The Department has a strong record of preparing students for Ph.D. study elsewhere. Approximately one-fourth to one-third of our M.A. graduates go on to advanced study at some time in their careers, and they are admitted to top-ranked theoretical and applied programs in universities in the U.S. and other countries.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, a statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation are required. Applicants interested in a Teaching Assistant position in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Swahili, and Undergraduate Linguistics instruction should submit a teaching philosophy. A TA position in Undergraduate Linguistics is awarded only to those who already hold a graduate level degree. An additional recommendation from a person in a supervisory position in their previous teaching job is helpful. These requirements apply to dual degree applicants as well. GRE scores are not required.

International Students

A TOEFL-iBT score of 100 or higher or an IELTS score of 7.0 (with minimum 6.5 in each band) or higher for non-native English speakers is required. This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Complete a minimum 31 hours with a minimum of a B grade in each course as follows:

Culminating Experience


As a culminating experience, students’ overall learning in the MA in Applied Linguistics program will be assessed by using the e-Portfolio, which is developed in LING 6970 – Professional Portfolio Seminar. The e-Portfolio consists of the following:

  7. MA Paper and Presentation
  8. One 7-min Teaching Demonstration Video (optional)
