Certificate Overview
The interdisciplinary graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies introduces students to a wide range of theoretical and practical perspectives on gender and sexuality and provides an excellent complement to the wide array of graduate degrees offered at Ohio University.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to describe the roles of gender and sexuality in social meaning and practice.
- Students will be able to compare and contrast gendered meanings and practices across different cultural, historical and structural contexts.
- Students will be able to critically evaluate the respective roles of sex, gender and sexuality in existing social orders and articulate normative concerns and alternatives.
Opportunities upon Completion
The Graduate Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies equips students to engage in a wide range of analytical frameworks and empirical perspectives involving gender and other elements of diversity. There is increasing demand for expertise in issues related to gender both globally and locally.
Not only are businesses and corporations looking for employees with an understanding of women’s issues such as sexual harassment, flex-time, parental leave, pay equity, and equal employment opportunities, but also the development globally of agencies and organizations related to gender concerns is spurring demand for graduates with a specialization in women’s and gender studies.
Additionally, there is growing demand in the professions of law, medicine, social work, teaching.
Admission Requirements
No additional requirements beyond university graduate admission requirements.
International Students
This certificate program alone does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
Completion Requirements
The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies graduate certificate requires four courses (16 credit hours).
