Certificate Overview

This certificate teaches concepts associated with the administration of music programs both at the university level and in the private sector. Students will explore how to effectively manage music programs including symphony orchestras, professional and amateur performing ensembles, and music schools and departments. Courses also provide general knowledge in music as well as music performance opportunities. This 12-hour certificate is geared primarily to students pursuing a master’s degree in music or the Master of Arts Administration. This certificate utilizes existing resources plus the addition of one new course which is being staffed by current faculty.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

  • Students will recognize the challenges facing arts organizations and how relationships with boards, donors, and stakeholders shape the interconnectedness of these systems within the organization.
  • Students will gain competencies in essential music administration functions including communication, public relations, cultural policy, marketing, advocacy, governance, ethical leadership, community engagement, and resource development and management.
  • Students will create an effective fundraising and development strategies to raise funds from a variety of available sources and individual donors.
  • Students will be able to identify administrative challenges inherent in music programs.
  • Students will be able to effectively address and implement strategies to positively impact these challenges.
  • Students will be able to identify available resources to assist with administrative challenges.

Opportunities upon Completion

Music Administration is a broad, evolving field of study with rapidly expanding full-time job opportunities. The certificate equips students, who may come from a range of academic backgrounds and professional experiences, with the basic tools to gain entry-level jobs in the field or advance current knowledge and practice. Students will be prepared for jobs that support arts and cultural organizations, navigate challenges in the non-profit sector, and advocate for policies and resources that support arts organizations and programs.

Admission Requirements

  • Completed application form
  • Copy of most recent transcript or DARS report (GPA of 3.0 or higher)
  • Interview with a School of Music administrator
  • Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent professional experience is required

International Students

This certificate program alone does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate.

Completion Requirements

The Certificate requires 12 credit hours total. Transfer credits may not be applied to the certificate.
